October 9-13, 2025

Once again we were able to keep the streak alive and make a trek up north to Middle Saranac Lake for our fall fishing adventure. October was decided on due to schedules, so we were hoping the weather would be cooperative because you just never know what the Adirondacks will have in store for you in October. As you will see the sun shone on us for most of the trip and while it was a little chilly, we could not have asked for much better weather.

Going in October also means we don't have to "officially" reserve our camping location, so we were hopeful that we would get the lean-to site near Hungry Bay
.

Loaded up and ready to go, you'll notice a new addition, a custom made "portable" pole holder. We can bring even more poles now!

On the water and on our way to our home away from home for a little bit. I recall the air definitely had a little bite when the boat got moving, but the sun is shining and it's crisp and clean.

Same as it ever was .... beautiful!

Heading through the portal with it's brand new gate and a few other cosmetic upgrades

Gateway to freedom!

We did indeed find that site # 81 was available so we quickly tied up the Grumman and claimed it as home for a few days.

Camp is setup and it's a beautiful day, let's hit the lake

You can see just how low the water level was this year by looking at the coloration on this protruding boulder

It really was a crisp clear fall day, awesome!

I am sure we made a few casts the first afternoon, but as you know, Day 1 is always about just getting camp setup and also getting in a relaxed frame of mind, so no pictures of fish.

Day 2

After a great nights sleep I am sure, we woke up to another bluebird day in the great north.

This is a very calm and serene place, and usually very quiet, except for during duck season.

I know Labs love water, especially Isla, but that lake water was so cold ! I don't think your potato is still here.

Okay, we are burning sunlight boys, the days are short. Let's go fishing! Looks like the Captain put us on some Largemouth Bass to start.

With the water being so low, it was tough to know where the weeds would be and hence where the fish would be. A popular spring location between an island and the southern shore looked very promising as there were weeds but not as thick as usual, which made it at least fishable.

Oh yeah, the pike are in here We'll be back

A quick trip around the lake and a nice view of Ampersand, here again you can see just how low the water level was by presence of the reeds which are usually just barely showing on top of the water when the level is higher.

As the afternoon is waning, we always like to finish the day in the creek mouth and then at the drop off before heading back to camp for the evening.

There's got to be some fish in here

Captain finds a nice Largemouth willing to be fooled

Not to be outdone, I also tricked a healthy bass into joining the fun

Look at this monster bass LOL This pike is a little better

Okay, the sun is going down, let's drift out to the drop off before dark and see if anything is biting. What we found was a large school of huge perch!

Umm, I think we might have a new Perch King Rog', that's a beauty!

I do not recall how many we caught in the short time before sunset, but it was fast and furious for a while. I wish we had brought some fish fry fixin's because we could've have had a feast on probably one of the best tasting freshwater fish around, in my opinion. We caught a mess of them, I know that. We had multiple doubles and at least one triple.

We eventually left them biting so we could get back to camp in time to cook, it was steak night after all!

Day 3

Looks like the sun is shining again, so after a hearty camp breakfast, it was time to cruise the lake and check all of our normal spots and see if the pike would cooperate. Looks like we found a couple in a small bay across from camp

Let's take a little cruise and go check out our usual haunt on Weller Pond.

Isla knows where we are going

We decided to hang out at our old familiar camp for a bit, just enjoying the weather and solitude. Once again you can see how low the water was this year.

Looks like I managed to land another pike somewhere as the sun is already getting low

Back at camp in plenty of time to relax, cook some dinner, have a few cold ones, listen to some great classic rock and enjoy another awesome sunset. This particular camp site is great for all of that.

What are you doing Isla?

Day 4

Another cool crisp morning as the mist lifts off the lake, it never gets old.

Front must be coming in, the fish are biting good today, and everybody is getting in on the action, you can see in these pictures that the weather is going from sunny to cloudy too

I think we should head back to that spot behind the isalnd

I recall that for whatever reason, the one lure/color/size that I was throwing that late afternoon was killing it back there! Nope, that's a secret.

Captain says, "You're done Guere", time to leave them biting

As the sun lowers, the mountains are a purple majesty!

Another awesome sunset

Another great night in camp

Day 5

As usual, the time went by way too quickly this year. With the exception of the last morning (of course), we were indeed blessed with great weather considering the time of year. Our stuff only got a little wet while packing up. As I say every year, I consider myself blessed to have been able to do this with great friends in such an awesome place for so many years.

God willing, we'll be back next year
